The film is based on Daniel Carney's novel "The Thin White Line" (later published by Corgi Books under the title "Wild Geese").
Burt Lancaster hoped to get the role of Janders, but was unable to participate in the filming due to being busy with another movie.
Mike Hoare, a well-known participant in the fighting during the Congo Crisis, served as a consultant on the film. He was invited to participate by his former subordinate, Ian Yule, who was also a mercenary.
Relatives of producer Euan Lloyd appeared in the film: his daughter Rosalind Lloyd and his wife Jane Hilton.
