Short description

England, 1763. After being convicted of a crime, the young and beautiful Abigail Hale agrees, to escape the gallows, to serve fourteen years as a slave in the colony of Virginia, whose inhabitants begin to hear and fear the sinister song of the threatening drums of war that resound in the wild Ohio valley.

Producer Cecil B. DeMille (1881-1959) flew into a rage when Paulette Goddard refused to perform in a difficult scene where her character was pelted with flaming projectiles. DeMille was forced to hire a stuntwoman, who subsequently suffered burns. It is claimed that DeMille had the opportunity to get even with Goddard five years later, when he was filming 'The Greatest Show on Earth' (1952), and Goddard sought the key role, but he cast Gloria Grahame (1923-1981) instead.
