What's left behind the scenes
- The screenplay for the film was written by Stephen Jeffreys based on his own play, which is currently running at the Royal Court Theatre in London.
- John Malkovich, who plays King Charles II in the film, successfully performs the role of Rochester on stage.
- In the later years of his life, Rochester changed his faith (became a Puritan) and wrote several elegant epigrams about Charles II and a humorous epitaph.
- Filming began on March 3, 2004.
- The costumes for the film were designed by Peter Greenaway's regular costume designer.
- Filming took place on the Isle of Man.
- Filming took only 45 days.
- Almost the entire film was shot with a handheld camera. Of the significant scenes, only two panoramas of the theater interior were intentionally shot with a fixed camera.
