The screenplay for the film was written by Stephen Jeffreys based on his own play, which is currently running at the Royal Court Theatre in London.
John Malkovich, who plays King Charles II in the film, successfully performs the role of Rochester on stage.
In the later years of his life, Rochester changed his faith (became a Puritan) and wrote several elegant epigrams about Charles II and a humorous epitaph.
Filming began on March 3, 2004.
The costumes for the film were designed by Peter Greenaway's regular costume designer.
