• The screenplay for the film was written by Stephen Jeffreys based on his own play, which is currently running at the Royal Court Theatre in London.
• John Malkovich, who plays King Charles II in the film, successfully performs the role of Rochester on stage.
• In the later years of his life, Rochester changed his faith (became a Puritan) and wrote several elegant epigrams about Charles II and a humorous epitaph.
