- The film is based on Lee Child's novel “One Shot” (2005), which is the ninth in the Jack Reacher series.
- Hayley Atwell, Brit Marling, and Alexa Davalos were considered for the role of Helen Rodin.
- The debut showing of the film's teaser coincided with Tom Cruise's fiftieth birthday.
- The character of Jack Reacher in Lee Child's book series is 1.95 meters tall and weighs around 100 kilograms. Tom Cruise is 1.7 meters tall.
- Brad Pitt, Hugh Jackman, Vince Vaughn, Jamie Foxx, and Will Smith were considered for the role of Jack Reacher before it went to Tom Cruise.
- Tom Cruise performed all of his character's driving stunts himself.
- The film's release was scheduled for December 21, 2012, with an American gala premiere on December 15. However, the premiere was postponed following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which occurred on December 14.
- Lee Child, the author of the book the film is based on, played a cameo role as a police officer handing Reacher his personal belongings when he is released from prison.

- In the scene where Reacher's car crashes into barrels, the vehicle accidentally stalled after the impact, but Tom Cruise managed to quickly restart it to continue. As a result, instead of reshooting the scene, Christopher McQuarrie decided to leave it as is, as he felt it added tension to the film.
- Midway through the film, Detective Emerson asks his assistant to find someone capable of killing an opponent with one blow. She replies that he "needs a guy from 1109." This is a reference to the film "Minority Report" (2002), where Tom Cruise's character investigated case #1109.
- During the car chase scene with the police, a vehicle inspection sticker can be seen on Reacher's car. Initially, it shows July 2012, but the date changes to September 2012.
- In the bar, when Jack calls Helen and Charlie, the call timer on the Blackberry abruptly changes from 25 to 27, and then to 15 seconds.
- During the car chase, the main character's vehicle sustained damage to the rear left side, including the taillight; however, by the end of the chase, both taillights were intact again.
- Filming took place from October 3, 2011, to January 17, 2012, in Pittsburgh and Saltsburg, USA.
