Short description
After an abrupt and violent encounter with a French warship inflicts severe damage upon his ship, a captain of the British Royal Navy begins a chase over two oceans to capture or destroy the enemy, though he must weigh his commitment to duty and ferocious pursuit of glory against the safety of his devoted crew, including the ship's thoughtful surgeon, his best friend.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Patrick O'Brian's series of novels about Captain Jack Aubrey and Doctor Stephen Maturin (1970-2004).
  • To help the actors playing the ship's crew bond, Russell Crowe organized regular rugby games.
  • Ralph Fiennes was considered for the role of Doctor Maturin.
  • Approximately 2,000 costumes were used during the making of the film.
  • Filming took around 100 days at the Baja Studios in Mexico, and only 10 days at sea.
  • Russell Crowe performed most of the violin playing himself. He later admitted that learning the instrument was the most challenging thing he had ever done for a film.
  • To research his role, Paul Bettany went to the Royal College of Surgeons in London to learn how to use surgical instruments from the 18th century.
  • According to Aubrey’s letter to his beloved, the film’s action takes place in 1805.
  • In the Russian translation of the book, Jack Aubrey's ship is called "Surprise." There are quite a few differences between the film and the books.
  • Historical consultants were constantly present during the filming of "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," assisting the film crew and providing advice on important historical events.
  • To participate in this project, Russell Crowe temporarily turned down a role in "Knockdown." He eventually returned to the project, but the director had already been replaced.
  • The first film in history to be shot on the Galapagos Islands.
  • Two ships were used for filming the movie, one of which – "Rose" – was an exact replica of the frigate "Surprise." The second ship was an exact copy of the "Rose" and stood on a set at a film studio in Mexico.
  • Filming took place from June 17 to November 11, 2002.
