- The film is based on the 1963 science fiction comedy of the same name, whose director, Jerry Lewis, serves as an executive producer here.
- In one episode, Professor Klump opens his desk after class and secretly, with a feeling of deep longing, takes out a Snickers chocolate bar. However, when the film was released in the United Kingdom, the chocolate was digitally altered to the Chocky brand.
- Dean Dean Richmond was named after Bill Richmond – a co-writer of the original 1963 film. And the offensive comic from the bar, Reggie Warrington, was named after Reginald and Warrington Hudlin, who worked with Eddie Murphy on the film 'Boomerang' (1992).
- Filming took place in Los Angeles and its suburbs, as well as in the California towns of San Marino and Pasadena.
- Eddie Murphy played seven roles in this film (he portrays all characters of both genders – except for the younger brother, played by Jamal Mixon – from the 'nutty professor' family) through physical transformation and the skillful makeup work of Rick Baker, a master of his craft, for which he received another well-deserved 'Oscar'. Thus, Eddie Murphy plays the following characters: Sherman Klump – a college professor, Cletus Klump – his father, Anna Pearl Jensen Klump – his mother, Ida May Jensen – his grandmother, Ernie Klump – his older brother, Buddy Lava – Sherman Klump's 'double', Lance Perkins.
