- To make Tom Cruise look even younger in this film, the producers forced him to undergo grueling physical training. The actor had to train daily, resulting in a 10-pound weight loss. However, afterwards he had to eat exclusively high-calorie foods so he would resemble a fresh-faced and chubby teenager.
- Among the actors who auditioned for the main role were Tom Hanks and Nicolas Cage.
- Timothy Hutton was the first candidate for the role of Joel, but he turned it down.
- Sean Penn filmed a cameo appearance, playing a passenger in a "Porsche".
- Two different endings were filmed and tested with audience screenings. Based on the results, the version that was ultimately included in the final cut was chosen. Director Paul Brickman preferred a more pessimistic ending.
