However, afterwards he had to eat exclusively high-calorie foods so he would resemble a fresh-faced and chubby teenager.
Among the actors who auditioned for the main role were Tom Hanks and Nicolas Cage.
Timothy Hutton was the first candidate for the role of Joel, but he turned it down.
Sean Penn filmed a cameo appearance, playing a passenger in a "Porsche".
Two different endings were filmed and tested with audience screenings. Based on the results, the version that was ultimately included in the final cut was chosen. Director Paul Brickman preferred a more pessimistic ending.
