At one point, a police procedural from 1977-1983 is shown on TV. Robert Zemeckis noticed Alan Silvestri, a composer working on the show’s creative team, and invited him to his 1984 adventure romance, "Romancing the Stone." This was Silvestri’s first work in cinema. The drama "Then. Now. Always." marked the 40th anniversary of Zemeckis and Silvestri's friendship and collaboration.
Precise indications of the timeline are not always given, but various story arcs unfold during the Ice Age, in the pre-Columbian era (the period of history in North, Central, and South America before the arrival of the first European colonists), in 1776, 1900, 1940, between 1945 and the present day, and between 2010 and 2020, but always in the same location.
Exactly one hour after the start of the film, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright (playing Richard and Margaret, respectively) are shown as they appeared at the time of filming. For the rest of the time, either their faces are digitally de-aged using computer technology, or they are shown in makeup concealing wrinkles.
