The narrow checkered black and white trousers worn by Michael McKean's character are a reference to Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick from the late 1970s, who wore similar trousers at the height of his fame.
Tony Hendra, who played the band's producer in the film 'This Is Spinal Tap' (1984), died in 2021, and his daughter Kerry Gadlimen plays him in the sequel.

Michael McKean's character wears a Shank Hall t-shirt, a fictional establishment in Milwaukee where the band performed in the original 1984 film. In July 1984, a music promoter organized a performance by the band at the UW-Madison Ballroom and promised its members that if he ever opened a club in Milwaukee, he would name it Shank Hall. He did indeed open a club with that name in Milwaukee five years later.
