At the insistence of Luc Besson, the lead actress, Anne Parillaud, spent a lot of time handling weapons to get used to them. She constantly loaded and unloaded a mock pistol even while in her car. Once, police noticed this, assumed the weapon was real, and forced the actress to stop and exit the car with her hands raised.
Victor arrives at the embassy in a Mercedes with diplomatic license plates indicating the car belongs to the Australian embassy.
In the restaurant scene, Nikita fires a Desert Eagle Mark VII pistol chambered in .357 Magnum, manufactured by the Israeli military state corporation Israel Military Industries.
Filming took place from February 13 to July 10, 1989.
